Christians on the Left?

The Christian Socialist Movement has re-branded itself with a new name Christians on the Left.  This followed an extensive consultation exercise.  The rather wordy introduction to the movement states that Christians on the left “exist to support, resource and network Christians involved on the left of politics in the UK. We are growing as a movement and have 1500 members, including 40 MPs and 15 peers.

Our primary identity is in Christ, not a political ideology, but our reading of scripture inevitably leads us tospeak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, standing against injustice in all its forms, on the side of poor and needy.”

It will be interesting to see if the new look movement manages to free itself from its tendency towards trying to combine left wing politics with a conservative ecclesiology, especially in relation to women and sexuality.  To see for yourself visit http://www.christiansontheleft.org.uk/
