Ramadan began in the UK on Monday 1 August. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and coincides with the new moon. It is a time when believers try to give up ‘bad habits’ and learn to exercise self-control, such as fasting from food and drink between sunrise and sunset (although the sick are exempt).

Also called the month of the Qu’ran, Muslims will spend time in prayer and reading the Qu’ran.

Because this month has been blessed by Allah, Muslims believe that their good actions bring a greater reward now than at any other time of year.
