Soweto Day

16 June was a key date in the resistance to the apartheid regime in South Africa. On that day in 1976 police opened fire on students protesting against a government proposal that secondary teaching of some key subjects should be in Afrikaans. You may have seen the iconic photograph of 13 year old Hector Petersen, the first victim of the 16 June 1976 Soweto Students Uprising.

Fortunately apartheid has been dismantled and a new nation has emerged. But we continue to remember all who suffered and whose memories are painful, as we pray for the future and peoples of South Africa.

God bless Africa
guard her peoples
guide her rulers
and grant her peace.
